About

Indoor Air Care Advocates is a National grassroots organization focused on improving indoor air quality in K-12 schools across the US. Established on January 1, 2022, with a soft launch that transitioned to an official commencement on April 26th, Indoor Air Care Advocates (IACA) has swiftly emerged as a formidable force in the realm of indoor air quality advocacy. With a membership boasting over 300 advocates across more than 40 states, IACA has concentrated its efforts on fostering healthier indoor environments within K-12 schools across the United States.

Comprising mainly parents, the organization's diverse membership also includes educators, healthcare and public health professionals, engineers, lawyers, social workers, and academics. This eclectic mix reflects the multifaceted approach adopted by IACA to address the intricate challenges associated with indoor air quality in educational settings.

One of the pivotal moments in IACA's journey was the briefing extended to the Vice President of Programs at the American Health Care Association/National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL) in 2022. During this session, IACA presented crucial ventilation recommendations and the latest scientific insights, underscoring the organization's commitment to evidence-based advocacy.

Notably, IACA's influence has reached international spheres, with the organization's active participation as a member of the Pew Charitable Trusts School Indoor Air Quality Exploration Advisory Committee. This collaboration has enabled IACA to contribute its expertise to initiatives aimed at enhancing indoor air quality standards within educational institutions.

The organization's impact has also been acknowledged by mainstream media, with mentions in Time Magazine's online platform and publications in Salon, further solidifying IACA's standing as a leading advocate for indoor air quality awareness and reform.

IACA's global reach expanded when the organization received an invitation to submit formal recommendations regarding ventilation to the Australian Parliamentary Inquiry, showcasing the cross-border relevance of its work.

In its mission to effect tangible change, IACA is actively involved in monitoring indoor air quality claims and facilitating parent verification/refutation processes in 30 K-12 school districts across the United States. This hands-on approach underscores the organization's commitment to not only advocating for change but actively engaging with communities to ensure the implementation of recommended measures.

The organization's expertise is bolstered by a comprehensive bibliography featuring over 90 articles covering a spectrum of topics, including building science, public health, HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning), industrial hygiene (IH), and the intersection of these disciplines with the ongoing challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

To stay at the forefront of advancements and policy changes, IACA members have actively participated in webinars organized by esteemed institutions such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) healthcare worker rulemaking sessions, and the White House Indoor Air Quality Summit.

Indoor Air Care Advocates continues to stand as a beacon of change, propelling the dialogue on indoor air quality forward and working tirelessly to create healthier and safer learning environments for students across the nation.
